The purpose of this trip is to support the after school centers that Canadian Humanitarian run and to involve the students in a concert put on by Andrew Allen. Andrew Allen is a Canadian born, LA living, awesome musician that has some great music and an even greater heart. The students have loved learning the song he wrote and we are all so excited for the big concert he will be putting on on Saturday with the help of students in the programs.
There are 5 centers throughout the city and the centers provide after school enrichment for some of the more destitute children, many of which are orphaned. Many of these orphaned students are able to live with family members or guardians, mostly because of the support given by the centers, and though the ability to live in a home is much better than that of living in an orphanage it is not always the most ideal situation. Without the center’s support these children would be unable to attend school and probably would not eat every day but donations and sponsors for these kids provide uniforms, books, one meal a day, medical care and a priceless amount of emotional support and guidance.
This week we’ve visited most of the centers as we help them prepare for the concert on Saturday. Andrew has been teaching his song, You and I. Elizabeth has been teaching them sign language and also creative signs for the song. Meagan has been playing games and I’ve been the Pinterest queen of crafts. The joy and appreciation the students exhude is amazing even as you see the pain hidden deep in their eyes.
